چکیده

A geochemical and mineralogical approach was used to analyze 3rd millennium BCE pottery from Southeast Lithuania that is attributed the foreign Corded Ware Culture local hunter-gatherers. SEM-EDS, XRF, XRD, FTIR were study peculiarities of develop hypotheses about raw material technology choices present. The amounts ten major elements in bulk clay matrix compositions (XRF, SEM-EDS) eleven trace analytes (XRF) compared with Clarke values tested highlight significance (Mann–Whitney U Wilcoxon Matched Pairs Tests) differences elemental quantities between compositions, lighter darker matrixes. These also revealed advantage Ward’s clustering method using City-block distance as a tool for inter-correlating ceramics attributing them specific communities locations. FTIR, SEM-EDS analyses indicated predominance iron-rich illite clay, quartz, alkali feldspar, addition very low medium firing temperatures. All samples consisted hydromicaceous Quaternary glacial sediments contain weathered granitoid fragments.

Olfaction in a hunter-gatherer society: Insights from language and culture

According to a widely-held view among various scholars, olfaction is inferior to other human senses. It is also believed by many that languages do not have words for describing smells. Data collected among the Maniq, a small population of nomadic foragers in southern Thailand, challenge the above claims and point to a great linguistic and cultural elaboration of odor. This article presents evid...

Supposing Hunter-gatherer Variability

J B. S. Haldane, the British geneticist, once mused, "my suspicion is that the universe is not only queerer than we suppose ,but queerer than we can suppose" (Haldane 1927:286). This comment can be paraphrased to summarize the fundamental problem presently facing hunter-gatherer studies: there is more variation among recent and especially past hunter-gatherer societies than we have supposed. Th...

Diet and Mobility in the Corded Ware of Central Europe

Isotopic investigations of two cemetery populations from the Corded Ware Culture in southern Germany reveal new information on the dating of these graves, human diet during this period, and individual mobility. Corded Ware Culture was present across much of temperate Europe ca. 2800-2200 cal. BC and is represented by distinctive artifacts and burial practices. Corded Ware was strongly influence...

Geochemical - mineralogical profiles through fresh and weathered till

To use glacial sediments effectively in mineral exploration, it is necessary to understand the causes of vertical compositional variability, whether they are sedimentologic, stratigraphic, or diagenetic. Many useful sedimentologic models are recorded in recent literature, particularly for till and related diamictons, and the importance of understanding contrasting compositions of different stra...
